How Muddy Paws Dog Grooming Started
Muddy Paws started in Cortez in 2016 with a tub, a table and a fairly simple idea: groom one dog at a time and actually finish it, rather than run six dogs through a day and leave four of them in crates waiting. It costs us volume. It buys the dogs a much better morning, and it means the person who greets your dog is the person who grooms it.
The name is not ironic. This is Four Corners country and the dogs here work, swim, hunt and dig. We see mud season, the Dolores River, cheatgrass in August and ice balls in January, and we would genuinely rather you brought a filthy dog in than let it dry into the coat for a fortnight. Nobody here is going to make a face about it.
What we care about most is being straight with you regarding your dog’s coat, including when that costs us the sale. We will tell you a double coat should not be shaved, that a pelt should be clipped rather than brushed out, that your dog needs a shorter interval than you were hoping, and that a routine bath is not worth driving from Durango for. That is most of the business, really.
