These are ranges, not quotes. Where a dog lands inside its range depends on what actually takes time: how much dead undercoat is in there, how long it has been since the last groom, whether we are working around anxiety or sore joints, and where the dog sits within its weight tier. We confirm the price when we see the dog, before any clipper is switched on. Ranges reflect typical 2026 Montezuma County jobs.

Our matting policy, in plain terms

We will not brush out a severely matted coat. Past roughly fifteen minutes of de-matting, pulling a pelt apart hurts more than a short haircut does, and it can leave the skin bruised and raw underneath. When we find a coat in that state we stop, call you, and recommend clipping it short so it can grow back properly. It is not the result anyone wanted, and it is the right call for the dog every time.

About Us

Our Story

Muddy Paws started in Cortez in 2016 with a tub, a table and a fairly simple idea: groom one dog at a time and actually finish it, rather than run six dogs through a day and leave four of them in crates waiting. It costs us volume. It buys the dogs a much better morning, and it means the person who greets your dog is the person who grooms it.

The name is not ironic. This is Four Corners country and the dogs here work, swim, hunt and dig. We see mud season, the Dolores River, cheatgrass in August and ice balls in January, and we would genuinely rather you brought a filthy dog in than let it dry into the coat for a fortnight. Nobody here is going to make a face about it.

Four steps from the first call to a finished job, whether it is a weekly nail trim to a full haircut.

You Call or Text

Tell us the breed or your best guess, the rough weight, and when the last groom was. A photo helps more than a description. We will quote you a range on the spot.

We Meet the Dog

At drop-off we go through the coat with you and agree the haircut before we start. If we find matting or a skin problem you did not know about, you hear about it then, not on the invoice.

One Dog at a Time

Your dog is not sitting in a crate waiting its turn. It comes in, gets groomed, and goes home — usually two to three hours, and we text you when it is close.

Home Clean and Comfortable

You get the dog back, plus what we noticed: a lump, a sore ear, an overgrown dewclaw, a coat that needs a shorter interval. Anything a vet should see, we say so.

No pressure and no surprise add-ons — the number on the written quote is the number you pay.

Common Questions About Dog Grooming in Cortez

Straight answers to what Four Corners dog owners actually ask us.

It depends almost entirely on coat type, not on how dirty the dog looks. A curly or wool coat — poodles, doodles, bichons — keeps growing and keeps trapping whatever it grows around, so it needs a full groom every four to six weeks or it mats. Long silky coats run six to eight weeks. Double coats do not need haircuts at all, but want a bath and a proper undercoat blow-out every eight to twelve weeks, more often through the spring and autumn coat blows. Smooth coats can go three or four months. Nails are separate, and are on a two-to-four-week clock for nearly every dog.
We will not brush out a severely matted coat. If the matting is light and localised — behind the ears, in the armpits, around a collar — we will work it out and charge de-matting time in fifteen-minute blocks. We will tell you which situation you are in before we start.
No, and we would rather explain why than just refuse. On a Husky, Aussie, Golden or Shepherd the coat is two layers doing two jobs: the soft undercoat insulates, and the coarse topcoat blocks sun and actually helps the dog shed heat. Shaving removes the layer that protects and leaves the layer that traps, and on many dogs the topcoat grows back patchy, coarse, or not at all. What genuinely helps a hot double-coated dog is getting the dead undercoat out, which is exactly what a de-shedding blow-out does. The one exception is a coat matted past saving, where clipping is the humane option.
Most grooms run two to three hours from drop-off, longer for a big matted double coat or a dog that needs frequent breaks. We work one dog at a time, so yours is not waiting its turn in a kennel while another dog is on the table. We text you when it is about half an hour from done.
Usually yes, and it is worth telling us up front rather than at the door. For a first visit we will often do a short, deliberately dull session — handling, the sound of the clippers, the table, the dryer, a bath and a tidy — and stop there. Two short good visits get you further than one long bad one. What we will not do is fight a dog through a groom; if a dog is telling us it has had enough, we stop and talk to you about the next step.
That is most of the year around here. Grass awns and foxtails work into the fur between the toes, up into the ears and under the armpits, and they only travel one direction — inward — so we check those places on every dog through summer and autumn and tell you what we find. In winter the problem inverts: snow packs into the fur between the pads and freezes into ice balls that make a dog walk sore, and the mag chloride off the highway dries and cracks the pads. Keeping paw fur trimmed level with the pads solves most of it and takes us two minutes.
