Nails, Ears & Add-Ons in Cortez, CO

Nails are the part of grooming that matters most and gets skipped most. A nail long enough to touch the floor when the dog is standing pushes back into the nail bed with every step, which is sore, and over months it changes how the dog loads its feet and its joints. On an older dog that is a genuine quality of life issue rather than a cosmetic one. Most dogs need them done every two to four weeks, far more often than they need a groom, which is why we made it walk-in.

Grinding versus clipping is worth a sentence. Clippers are quick and fine for most dogs. A grinder takes the nail back in small increments, which lets us get closer to the quick safely on dark nails where we cannot see it, and leaves a smooth edge that will not catch on rugs or scratch your legs. Dogs that hate the buzz get the clippers; dogs that hate the pressure get the grinder.

The rest of this page is the small stuff that keeps the gap between grooms comfortable: ears, teeth, paw pads, and a tidy of the face, feet and rear when the coat is fine everywhere else but the dog cannot see out or is dragging half the yard home.

Our Process

How We Work

The same four steps on every job, from a single service walk-in nail trim to a full groom.

01

You Call or Text

Tell us the breed or your best guess, the rough weight, and when the last groom was. A photo helps more than a description. We will quote you a range on the spot.

02

We Meet the Dog

At drop-off we go through the coat with you and agree the haircut before we start. If we find matting or a skin problem you did not know about, you hear about it then, not on the invoice.

03

One Dog at a Time

Your dog is not sitting in a crate waiting its turn. It comes in, gets groomed, and goes home — usually two to three hours, and we text you when it is close.

04

Home Clean and Comfortable

You get the dog back, plus what we noticed: a lump, a sore ear, an overgrown dewclaw, a coat that needs a shorter interval. Anything a vet should see, we say so.

No pressure and no surprise add-ons — the number on the written quote is the number you pay.

These are ranges, not quotes. Where a dog lands inside its range depends on what actually takes time: how much dead undercoat is in there, how long it has been since the last groom, whether we are working around anxiety or sore joints, and where the dog sits within its weight tier. We confirm the price when we see the dog, before any clipper is switched on. Ranges reflect typical 2026 Montezuma County jobs.

Our matting policy, in plain terms

We will not brush out a severely matted coat. Past roughly fifteen minutes of de-matting, pulling a pelt apart hurts more than a short haircut does, and it can leave the skin bruised and raw underneath. When we find a coat in that state we stop, call you, and recommend clipping it short so it can grow back properly. It is not the result anyone wanted, and it is the right call for the dog every time.

Not sure which row your dog is on?

Text a photo to (970) 555-0164 and we will tell you the coat type and the range before you leave the house.

Frequently Asked

Common Questions About Nail Trims & Add-Ons

What Cortez-area dog owners ask us most about this service.

Every two to four weeks for most dogs. The test needs no calendar: stand the dog on a hard floor and look. If the nails touch the floor, or you hear them clicking as the dog walks, they are long. Dogs that walk a lot on pavement wear them down and need it less; dogs on dirt and grass almost never do.
No. Tuesday through Friday you can turn up and we will fit you in between dogs — usually a five minute job. Saturdays are appointment-heavy, so ring ahead for those.
We keep styptic powder on hand and it stops quickly. It is uncommon, and it is the main reason we prefer grinding on dark nails where the quick is invisible. If a dog’s nails are very overgrown the quick has grown out with them, and we cannot take them fully short in one go without hitting it. In that case we take them back as far as is safe and have you return every couple of weeks; the quick recedes and we get there over a few visits.
More common than you would think, and worth saying at the door. We will try with two people, quietly, and take the nails we can get rather than fighting for all eighteen. Several short successful visits beat one bad one. If a dog is genuinely over threshold we will say so and suggest talking to your vet about sedation for a proper reset.
Nails and ears are already included in every full groom and every bath and brush. Teeth, glands, paw balm and skin baths are extras you can add when you book or at drop-off.
