Muddy Paws Dog Grooming in Towaoc

Towaoc is about eleven miles south of us, which makes it one of the shorter runs in our service area. If you are coming into Cortez for anything else, the timing usually works out without a special trip.

The country between Towaoc and the shop is dry, open, high-desert ground at the base of Sleeping Ute Mountain, and dogs that range over it come back with the usual local haul: cheatgrass awns and burrs worked into the feet and ears, dust down at the skin, and in winter ice packed hard between the pads. Paw fur trimmed level with the pads solves most of that, and takes us a couple of minutes.

We groom every coat type and size, and there is no breed we will refuse on the basis of what it is. What we do assess is the individual dog on the day — how it handles the table, the noise, and having its feet held — and we will tell you straight what is realistic in one session.

These are ranges, not quotes. Where a dog lands inside its range depends on what actually takes time: how much dead undercoat is in there, how long it has been since the last groom, whether we are working around anxiety or sore joints, and where the dog sits within its weight tier. We confirm the price when we see the dog, before any clipper is switched on. Ranges reflect typical 2026 Montezuma County jobs.

Our matting policy, in plain terms

We will not brush out a severely matted coat. Past roughly fifteen minutes of de-matting, pulling a pelt apart hurts more than a short haircut does, and it can leave the skin bruised and raw underneath. When we find a coat in that state we stop, call you, and recommend clipping it short so it can grow back properly. It is not the result anyone wanted, and it is the right call for the dog every time.

Mostly it needs its feet looked at more often. Cheatgrass and foxtail awns work in between the toes and into the ears through summer and autumn and only travel inward; in winter, snow packs into the same fur and freezes into ice balls, and mag chloride off the road dries and cracks the pads. Keeping paw fur trimmed level with the pads is the single most useful thing, and dry high-desert air means coats want conditioning more than they would at lower elevation.
