Dog Grooming in Cortez, CO

Cortez is home. We are the shop in the Montezuma County seat, at about 6,200 feet in the Four Corners country of southwest Colorado, grooming the dogs that live the way dogs live here — outside, in the dirt, up a trail.

Muddy Paws Dog Grooming in Cortez

We are a Cortez shop and everything about how we work comes from that. Our clients are people we see at the grocery store, so the incentive to be straight with you about your dog’s coat is fairly direct.

The dogs here are mostly working and outdoor dogs, and the grooming calendar follows the country rather than the fashion. Spring is mud and the start of the coat blow. Summer and autumn are foxtails, cheatgrass awns and burrs, which get into feet, ears and armpits and only travel inward. Winter is snow packing into the fur between the pads and freezing there, plus mag chloride off the highway drying and cracking pads.

At about 6,200 feet the air is dry year-round, and that shows up in coats and skin more than people expect: dandruff, static, a coat that feels brittle and breaks rather than shedding cleanly. Conditioner choice matters more here than it would at sea level, and a dog that is itchy in February is usually dry rather than allergic.

Practically, being the local shop means we can do things a bigger operation cannot be bothered with. Walk-in nail trims Tuesday through Friday. A quick burr check for a dog that just needs its feet sorted after a weekend out. And one dog on the table at a time, so nothing sits in a crate waiting its turn.

These are ranges, not quotes. Where a dog lands inside its range depends on what actually takes time: how much dead undercoat is in there, how long it has been since the last groom, whether we are working around anxiety or sore joints, and where the dog sits within its weight tier. We confirm the price when we see the dog, before any clipper is switched on. Ranges reflect typical 2026 Montezuma County jobs.

Our matting policy, in plain terms

We will not brush out a severely matted coat. Past roughly fifteen minutes of de-matting, pulling a pelt apart hurts more than a short haircut does, and it can leave the skin bruised and raw underneath. When we find a coat in that state we stop, call you, and recommend clipping it short so it can grow back properly. It is not the result anyone wanted, and it is the right call for the dog every time.

Common Questions About Dog Grooming for Cortez, CO

Straight answers for Cortez-area dog owners.

Cortez is our home and our only shop. Call us at (970) 555-0164 and we will give you directions and get you booked in.
Locally owned, in Cortez, since 2016. Not a franchise, not a counter inside a bigger store, and not a call centre booking on our behalf.
Every coat type and every size, from a six-pound Yorkie to a Great Pyrenees. What we assess is the individual dog on the day rather than the breed on paper — and we will tell you honestly if we do not think we are the right fit.
Call or text (970) 555-0164. Tell us the breed or your best guess, the rough weight, and roughly when the last groom was, and send a photo if you have one — we can usually quote a range from that before you arrive.
Mostly it needs its feet looked at more often. Cheatgrass and foxtail awns work in between the toes and into the ears through summer and autumn and only travel inward; in winter, snow packs into the same fur and freezes into ice balls, and mag chloride off the road dries and cracks the pads. Keeping paw fur trimmed level with the pads is the single most useful thing, and dry high-desert air means coats want conditioning more than they would at lower elevation.
